About Bad Wolf Chess Club

Founded: April 7, 2022

Bad Wolf Chess Club came about because I wanted to spend more time with my son, who was beginning to grow quickly in his chess skill. I also knew that if my son was to continue playing and growing long term, he would need to find a community of chess players who shared his passion and joy for the game.

Founded on the principles of quality time between a father & son (family), building a local chess community (community), and having a safe place to learn and have fun, Bad Wolf Chess Club is for people of ages 8yo+, with varying backgrounds, ability and skill. When put altogether with learning and a mindset for growth, we have the opportunity to play great chess.

About Me

Coach Nate Easterday

I have been playing chess since I was 5-years old. I was lucky to have a community of chess players who helped me grow as a player. As a beginner player, the more opportunities to be around people who believed in me, encouraged me, and taught me how to study and play were the key to becoming a successful player. The chess community helped me find the joy of playing chess that has lasted a lifetime.

As a 6th-grader, I was a starting member of the Smithsburg High School Chess Team and helped my team to many undefeated seasons. I was able to progress from 5th-board in 6th-grade to 1st-board by my sophomore year. During high school and college (University of Maryland College Park), I won or was a top 5 finalist in various tournaments, highlighted by placing 4th in the Maryland State High School Chess Championships.
